Thanks for joining us on our blog for C.E.L.E.B.R.E.!
C.E.L.E.B.R.E. stands for College Enrollment for Latinas Entering Bright Rewarding Educations.
I will be sharing some information about the background and need for the project and where we are hoping to go with it.
According to a 2017 San Luis Obispo Community Foundation publication, low income children have a 45% chance of never receiving a college degree. The same study found that from 2010-2015 high school graduates’ completion of UC/CSU requirements decreased by 2%, whereas statewide the percentage increased by 5%.
The numbers become more alarming when focusing on Latinas.
According to a 2011 Pew Hispanic Center Study, 17% of Latinas ages 25-29 obtained a Bachelor’s Degree compared to 43% of white females and 23% of black females of the same age group.
Latinas are faced with unique challenges when it comes to attending college: immigration status, poverty, discrimination, low self-esteem, linguistic barriers, gender stereotypes, family obligations, and even higher rates of mental health issues such as depression and attempted suicide.
C.E.L.E.B.R.E. will incorporate external assets such as support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, as well as incorporating internal assets such as a commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, and positive identity.
C.E.L.E.B.R.E. will work with the parents on education about the dangers of gender stereotyping, and to provide them with the tools to be supportive without fostering dependency with their college-bound daughters.
C.E.L.E.B.R.E. will create a community of Latinx families that are working together to encourage growth, positive outlooks and open communication about this evolution of understanding in terms of their daughters’ academic futures.
C.E.L.E.B.R.E. will be pairing up each student with a mentor that will be there for support throughout the program, and hopefully beyond.
C.E.L.E.B.R.E. could not work without the support of two wonderful agencies.
